Christiane Paul's Digital Art
In Christiane Paul's introduction, she gives a historical summary of technology and how it has opened doors to new possibilities in digital art. She explains that there are two types of digital art: one where technology is used as a tool to create the art (i.e photography, sculpture) and one where the medium is digital technology. As technology became more available, digital art became more prevalent. Different movements, such as the Dadaist poetry movement, paved way for more digital art. Their use of randomness with controlled rules became a standard of digital art.
Because of the constraints on technology in the 1960s, digital art focused mainly on graphics and points of light. As digital technology flourished, live video installations became more commonplace. With this new technology, artists were able to interact with viewers on a different level than before.
However, there are problems that arise with digital art that did not exist with traditional art. Digital art must be under constant maintenance. Because live installations are presented in video format, they are more expensive to maintain by museums and are more difficult to sell. This problem is also sen with internet art. If anyone with an internet connection is able to access the art, then how can someone put a value on it. Even with the problems that digital art faces, it is apparent that digital art will continue to grow in popularity.
Question: Even though digital art has existed for decades now, I wonder if it will ever be valued as much as traditional paintings.
